Crypto infrastructure company Ripple has officially crossed a major regulatory milestone, receiving final approval from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) to charter the Ripple National Trust Bank. This strategic maneuver is designed to significantly strengthen regulatory oversight, governance, and operational security surrounding the firm’s rapidly expanding stablecoin operations, most notably the Ripple USD (RLUSD) token.

According to official announcements from the company, the newly established national trust bank will take on specialized responsibilities within Ripple’s financial ecosystem. Its core functions will include managing segregated reserves dedicated to RLUSD, acting as an official collateral trustee for token holders, and delivering robust fiduciary digital asset custody services to institutional clients. By embedding traditional banking regulatory structures directly into its digital asset framework, Ripple aims to bridge the traditional financial sector with blockchain technology more seamlessly than ever before.

Despite the establishment of the new national trust bank, the operational mechanics governing the issuance and safeguarding of RLUSD will maintain their established institutional partnerships. RLUSD will continue to be issued by Standard Custody & Trust Company, a firm known for its rigorous compliance and regulatory standards. Meanwhile, financial behemoth Bank of New York Mellon will maintain its role as the primary reserve custodian, providing independent monthly attestations to ensure complete transparency regarding the backing of the stablecoin.

The timing of the national trust bank charter aligns with a period of remarkable growth for Ripple’s stablecoin initiative. Since its official launch in December 2024, RLUSD has experienced a swift ascent, scaling to an impressive $2.5 billion market capitalization. Ripple maintains that the stablecoin is fully backed and supported by cash and cash equivalents, including highly liquid U.S. government securities, providing holders with a high degree of stability and confidence in the asset’s peg and security.

Brad Garlinghouse, Chief Executive Officer of Ripple, emphasized the strategic importance of this regulatory approval, noting that it validates the company’s long-standing thesis regarding the convergence of traditional banking and decentralized technology. For years, leadership at Ripple has publicly asserted that cryptocurrencies and traditional financial institutions operate much more efficiently when integrated rather than kept at odds. The final approval for the Ripple National Trust Bank represents the tangible realization of that philosophy in everyday commercial practice.

Garlinghouse highlighted that the company has dedicated more than a decade to constructing fully compliant, regulated financial infrastructure capable of supporting institutional adoption at scale. Securing a national trust charter provides the firm with an exceptionally strong and reliable foundation, not only for RLUSD but also for the broader suite of institutional-grade products currently under development across global payments, enterprise custody solutions, and capital markets. As RLUSD continues its rapid market expansion, the new bank is expected to play a vital supporting role in scaling these comprehensive institutional services.

The decision to charter a national trust bank reflects a broader industry trend where prominent cryptocurrency enterprises seek direct regulatory frameworks to build deeper trust with traditional financial institutions, regulators, and enterprise clients alike. By operating within the stringent oversight of the OCC, Ripple positions itself to navigate changing regulatory landscapes across the United States while offering corporate and institutional partners the legal and operational clarity they require to adopt blockchain-based financial instruments safely.
