In approximately three weeks, streaming giant Netflix is scheduled to release one of the very first major dramatic retellings of the spectacular collapse of cryptocurrency exchange FTX. The upcoming series arrives in the wake of the high-profile federal trial and subsequent conviction of the exchange’s disgraced founder and former CEO, Sam “SBF” Bankman-Fried, who is currently serving a lengthy prison sentence. As the premiere approaches, the project has already generated significant media attention and industry controversy, highlighted by revelations that the actor tasked with portraying the fallen crypto wunderkind reached out to him directly behind bars.

According to a report published by Vanity Fair, Irish actor Anthony Boyle, who embodies Bankman-Fried in the Netflix dramatization titled The Altruists, secretly contacted the convicted felon via email while preparing for the demanding role. Although Boyle stated that he made a personal commitment to the former CEO—promising him that he would not publicly divulge the specific contents of their digital correspondence—Bankman-Fried reportedly answered the vast majority of the actor’s probing questions leading up to the series’ official release.

Boyle explained that his primary motivation for reaching out and studying the character stemmed from a deep psychological curiosity rather than an interest in financial markets or digital assets. In his interview with Vanity Fair, the actor reflected on the driving forces behind the meteoric rise and catastrophic fall of the man who was once celebrated as the world’s youngest billionaire.

“I was interested in what possessed someone to become the world’s youngest billionaire,” Boyle said, according to Vanity Fair. “I’m not really interested in money or crypto or finance. It was: What makes them do the things that they do?”

Based on an official trailer released by Netflix on October 8, the upcoming series appears to focus heavily on the complex professional and personal dynamics between Bankman-Fried and his close colleague and romantic partner, Caroline Ellison. Ellison served as the chief executive officer of Alameda Research, the quantitative trading firm and sister company to FTX that played a central role in the multi-billion-dollar financial scandal.

The real-world legal fallout for the key figures involved has been severe and historic. Following the dramatic implosion of FTX in late 2022, Sam Bankman-Fried was indicted by federal prosecutors and subsequently convicted by a jury on seven felony counts, including wire fraud, conspiracy, and money laundering related to the systemic misuse and misappropriation of billions of dollars in customer funds. He was later sentenced to 25 years in federal prison. In contrast, Caroline Ellison cooperated extensively with United States authorities as part of a plea deal and was released from custody in January after serving a prison sentence that lasted more than a year.

As Hollywood attempts to translate the complex financial fraud into narrative entertainment, the production has already drawn sharp criticism from individuals who lived through the actual events. Constance Wang, the former chief operating officer of FTX, voiced strong objections after viewing promotional material for the series. Wang stated that the on-screen depictions of the high-ranking executives made her “feel physically upset,” adding further critique that the real-world Bankman-Fried was considerably more “socially awkward” than the polished portrayal delivered by Anthony Boyle on screen.

The dramatic series The Altruists represents a notable milestone in the pop-culture chronicle of the FTX saga, which has already been the subject of intense scrutiny across various media formats. Bankman-Fried’s rapid ascent and sudden downfall have previously been analyzed, reported, and debated by numerous mainstream outlets. Most notably, he was the primary subject of acclaimed author Michael Lewis’s 2023 non-fiction book Going Infinite: The Rise and Fall of a New Tycoon. Additionally, actor and financial commentator Ben McKenzie featured a 2022 interview with the former CEO recorded just before the cryptocurrency exchange collapsed in his documentary Everyone Is Lying to You for Money. However, despite the abundance of investigative journalism, non-fiction literature, and documentary coverage, The Altruists stands out as the first significant scripted dramatization of SBF and the FTX scandal to hit television or the big screen.

The impending release of the Netflix series also coincides with ongoing legal battles in the United States judicial system. Attorneys representing the former FTX chief executive continue to challenge his conviction and sentence, navigating the complex appellate process in an effort to bring the case before the highest court in the nation. As legal teams prepare their arguments for potential appellate reviews, the public fascination with the rise, fall, and psychological profile of Sam Bankman-Fried shows no signs of abating, ensuring that The Altruists will debut amid an intensely scrutinized backdrop of real-world legal and financial reckoning.
