Soulframe Opens Its Doors to Everyone in November Alongside a Massive Open Alpha Overhaul

After three long years of closed, invite-only playtests, Digital Extremes is finally opening the gates to Soulframe for everyone. Beginning November 6, players who have been eagerly watching to see what the developers of the juggernaut sci-fi hit Warframe are cooking up with their new fantasy action role-playing game will finally be able to jump in and explore the realm for themselves. This major milestone transitions the title into a public-facing open alpha, welcoming a much broader audience into the fold to test servers, provide feedback, and experience the game’s evolving mechanics.

However, the shift to an open alpha is only the beginning of a transformative month for the studio’s ambitious fantasy project. Later in November, Digital Extremes plans to roll out a massive structural overhaul that will fundamentally change how players interact with the world around them. Midrath, the sweeping open-world landmass that serves as the primary setting for Soulframe, is undergoing a dramatic shift in tone and atmosphere. Rather than remaining the verdant, relatively peaceful environment players have grown accustomed to during the early playtests, the entire region will be darkened and corrupted, setting the stage for a much more challenging and atmospheric journey.

According to creative director Geoff Crookes, who spoke during a recent press presentation attended by PC Gamer, the revamped experience will not hold players’ hands quite as gently as before. "You’re going to enter a game that is much more unforgiving and harsh at first glance," Crookes explained, emphasizing the team’s intent to instill a deeper sense of urgency and atmosphere into the fantasy landscape.

This upcoming milestone update, officially designated as Prelude 17 or Verse of the Veilands, represents a monumental shift for the development team. Despite the inherent risks of overhauling core systems mid-development, the studio views this update as a critical step toward improving the initial onboarding experience for newcomers. Crookes noted that the primary goal of Verse of the Veilands is to give players significantly more ownership over their decisions during the early hours of the game. Because the system is still actively evolving, the features launching in November will represent the foundational bones of what the developers ultimately envision for the final release, leaving plenty of room for continued growth and refinement based on community feedback.

The decision to completely restructure the game’s opening hours stems directly from player feedback gathered over the past three years. Many participants in the early closed playtests struggled to reach the point in the game where they could freely and comfortably explore the open world. Listening closely to these pain points, the development team realized that a more direct, engaging introduction was desperately needed to guide players smoothly into the experience.

In Verse of the Veilands, the revamped main questline will directly teach players how to identify and dismantle the siphons that are actively draining Midrath of its vibrant color and life. As players successfully work to restore each zone, the surrounding environment will visibly change. Enemies, environmental hazards, and available resources will adapt in response to the land’s healing, while secondary activities—such as peaceful pastimes like fishing—will unlock to provide a welcome breather from combat. Furthermore, the update introduces a deeply requested companion system, allowing players to find a wolf pup and raise it into a fully grown, rideable mount capable of traversing the sprawling terrain.

Beyond mechanical adjustments and quality-of-life improvements, Verse of the Veilands aims to weave a much tighter, more cohesive narrative thread throughout the gameplay experience. Crookes highlighted that the new systems are designed to heavily reinforce the game’s overarching worldbuilding. Pages upon pages of fresh narrative writing dedicated to each faction leader are being integrated into the game. As players journey across Midrath, these leaders will frequently radio in, offering real-time commentary, lore, and historical context to enrich the player’s understanding of the realm. The development team’s ultimate vision is for these faction leaders to play a far more integrated, active role in guiding the player’s crusade to cleanse the corruption plaguing Midrath.

The forthcoming update is also introducing a brand-new Pact, Soulframe’s equivalent of a character class or a Warframe. While the exact name of the new Pact was still undecided at the time of the presentation, the developers described it as a specialized "hunter, poacher-type Pact" heavily tied to the alien Ode race. Equipping this Pact grants players a distinct arsenal of tactical abilities, including the capability to bind groups of enemies together using a futuristic sci-fi bola, pierce oncoming foes with a devastating cone of spikes, and send defeated targets flying high into the atmosphere by attaching a giant balloon to them in a manner reminiscent of tactical espionage games like Metal Gear Solid 5.

The sheer scale of content packed into Verse of the Veilands has kept the development team working down to the wire. The developers candidly admitted that they were still actively tweaking, balancing, and polishing various elements of the update just days before showing it off to the press. Crookes and lead designer Scott McGregor expressed a mixture of excitement and nervous anticipation regarding whether the monumental patch would be fully polished in time for its initial target. While some final pieces may take a bit longer to settle into place, the current roadmap ensures that the comprehensive update will be in the hands of players before the end of the following month, making it a wise recommendation for absolute newcomers to perhaps wait until the dust settles on the overhaul before diving in.

Reflecting on the sheer magnitude of the upcoming changes, McGregor acknowledged the anxiety that comes with altering a game so drastically mid-development. "I think this is probably one of the biggest, most violent changes we’ve made to the structure of the game in a long while," McGregor said. "Paired with open Preludes is nerve-wracking and we hope players and the feedback stays positive."

For those eager to see the final version of everything coming in Verse of the Veilands in action, Digital Extremes has scheduled a comprehensive gameplay broadcast on the official Soulframe Twitch channel, where the developers will break down the mechanics, showcase the new Pact, and provide further insight into the future of the open alpha.
