Nearly half of surveyed shoppers have already abandoned a purchase in the past year, underscoring the critical importance of payment choice and flexibility for modern retailers.

Zip, the global digital financial services company trading on the ASX under the ticker ZIP and known for offering innovative, people-centered financial products, has released new proprietary research that sheds light on how shifting consumer payment preferences are directly shaping where and how modern consumers decide to shop. According to the newly published data, the availability of specific financial tools at checkout has transformed from a mere convenience into a decisive factor in consumer purchasing behavior.

Among surveyed U.S. buy now, pay later, or BNPL, users, an overwhelming 83% reported that they would be likely to abandon a purchase entirely if their preferred BNPL provider were not available at the digital or physical checkout counter. This stark statistic highlights a profound evolution in consumer loyalty and expectations, demonstrating that brand allegiance is increasingly intertwined with the payment ecosystem that a retailer chooses to support.

The research delves deeper into the tangible impact of this phenomenon on retail sales, revealing that among those shoppers who express a strong preference for a specific provider, 46% have already abandoned a retail purchase within the past 12 months simply because their preferred provider was missing from the payment options. This behavior represents a significant, preventable loss of revenue for merchants who fail to diversify their checkout offerings to match consumer demand.

Furthermore, the economic footprint of these abandoned transactions is substantial. Of the surveyed consumers who reported abandoning a purchase due to a lack of preferred payment methods, 39% revealed that they did not simply reconsider or postpone their buying decision; instead, they immediately took their business elsewhere, completing their transaction with a different retailer that accommodated their preferred financial tools. Even more striking is the value of these lost opportunities: 75% of the abandoned carts that had a reported monetary value were worth $100 or more, representing high-value sales that slipped through the fingers of merchants due to rigid or limited checkout configurations.

Rory Herriman, President and Interim CEO of Zip US, emphasized the strategic implications of these findings for the broader retail and financial technology sectors.

"Payment choice isn’t just a checkout feature, it shapes where consumers choose to shop," said Rory Herriman, President and Interim CEO, Zip US. "These findings reinforce the importance of giving customers access to financial tools they know and trust. For retailers, offering the right payment options means creating better shopping experiences and reducing the risk of losing customers at checkout."

The comprehensive research findings reflect Zip’s ongoing corporate commitment to putting customers first by providing flexible, transparent payment options designed to support greater consumer control and financial confidence. By aligning with the way modern consumers prefer to manage their cash flow, these financial tools simultaneously help merchants better serve the specific shoppers they want to attract and keep over the long term.

As the retail landscape continues to evolve in response to macroeconomic pressures and shifting consumer demographics, understanding the complete customer journey from discovery to final payment has never been more vital. The data released by Zip underscores that alternative payment methods are no longer fringe offerings targeted at a small demographic of shoppers, but rather core components of modern commerce that heavily influence conversion rates, average order values, and long-term customer retention. Retailers navigating an increasingly competitive marketplace must evaluate their checkout infrastructure to ensure they meet these rising expectations, turning potential friction points into opportunities for growth and customer acquisition.
