Polymarket Trader Nears $1 Million in Profit as Democratic "Blue Wave" Sweeps U.S. Midterms

A resounding "blue wave" swept across the United States during the midterm elections, as the Democratic Party secured decisive control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate in what political analysts are calling a crushing blow to President Donald Trump.

Amid the sweeping political realignment, decentralized prediction markets experienced unprecedented trading volumes and dramatic real-time shifts. Chief among the beneficiaries of the political upset was a standout Polymarket user operating under the handle 0xA2, who surged to the top of the platform’s daily leaderboard.

According to data from Polymarket’s daily profit tracker, trader 0xA2 accumulated approximately $917,000 in profit over a 24-hour window, though the vast majority of those financial gains remained tied up in an active position pending the final certification of the Alaska Senate race—a contest that still carries a slim, yet mathematically real, possibility of an electoral upset.

The trader’s windfall began taking shape when they placed a substantial wager of $609,644 betting that Republicans would fail to secure any of the hotly contested Senate swing states. At the time the position was opened, prediction market odds sat at a modest 36%. As election night unfolded and returns heavily favored Democratic candidates, that market surged to an 87% probability. Consequently, the user’s initial stake swelled to a notional value of $1.48 million, placing them roughly $860,000 in the green on that single market alone.

Financial analysts and experienced traders quickly noted, however, that these impressive figures represent unrealized gains. Because 0xA2 continues to wait on the official final verdict from Alaska, their profit margins remain vulnerable to sudden shifts. Polymarket traders currently price a 14% chance of a late-stage upset in the state. While a 14% probability may appear small, market participants have been reminded of recent volatility; a similarly sized underdog scenario materialized just two weeks prior during Brazil’s high-stakes presidential election.

In addition to the pending Alaska position, 0xA2 successfully locked in $106,115 in realized profits by correctly predicting that the Democratic Party would capture the fiercely contested Texas Senate seat. Interestingly, alongside their political forecasting prowess, the user’s second-largest active position is a $1.42 million bet that the United States government will not officially confirm the existence of extraterrestrial life before the year 2027.

The frenetic pace of election night electrified decentralized betting platforms, which remained active around the clock while traditional financial exchanges and forecasting institutions operated on limited schedules.

"Election night showed how quickly round-the-clock markets move when traditional exchanges are closed. As polls began closing at 6pm ET, Kalshi’s odds of a Democratic sweep went from about 74% to 99%," said Kelly Ye, Head of Research at digital asset management firm Talos, in a research note shared with industry publications. "Prediction-market trading peaked between 8pm and 10pm ET, led by a small number of large trades."

The overall financial windfall extended far beyond a single top trader. Data from Polymarket’s leaderboards indicated that the platform’s top 10 most profitable users each cleared more than $170,000 in gains over the course of the evening. To put that massive liquidity into historical context, archival data from the Wayback Machine reveals that on a standard, relatively quiet day in March earlier this year, the top daily winner on Polymarket walked away with $154,000, while the 10th-place earner brought in approximately $29,700.

Prediction Markets and Elections

The midterms drew unprecedented public interest and capital to leading prediction markets such as Polymarket and Kalshi. According to data tracked by Precition.com, the midterm election markets attracted more than $546 million in notional trading volume over the final two weeks of the campaign cycle.

"The 2024 election was the breakthrough moment for prediction markets. It was their first major real-world test and the event that really drove volume and open interest," explained Dash, the pseudonymous data lead at Prediction.com. "Today, sports dominate trading volume, but politics is still the key driving factor for open interest."

During the 2024 presidential race, Polymarket cemented its status as a mainstream financial phenomenon, handling over $3.6 billion in volume on its flagship presidential market alone and earning high-profile recognition from Wall Street institutions like Bernstein analysts. Crucially, as the 2024 campaign progressed, predictors favored Donald Trump for the majority of the race while traditional mainstream polls frequently kept him neck-and-neck with Democratic nominee Kamala Harris. Many cryptocurrency enthusiasts and retail traders viewed this divergence as definitive proof that decentralized prediction markets offer superior forecasting accuracy compared to legacy political polling methods.

"Increasingly, people are looking for accurate forecasts on election results," Dash noted, "and prediction markets are one place they can be found."

At the same time, industry experts caution that market forecasts are not infallible and should not be interpreted as absolute certainties. Just two weeks prior to the midterms, Polymarket participants famously miscalculated the outcome of Brazil’s presidential election. Leading up to election day, platform users assigned incumbent challenger Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva roughly a 20% chance of victory, only to watch him decisively defeat his political rivals to secure another presidential term.

Market analysts told reporters at the time that Brazil’s strict regulatory ban on domestic prediction markets had left the global odds heavily influenced by external traders who lacked critical local knowledge to correct pricing anomalies. Furthermore, financial researchers emphasize that an assigned probability—even a low one—always carries the potential for realization.

"Ultimately, something that has an 80% chance of happening does not happen 20% of the time," explained Luke Nolan, a senior researcher at CoinShares, illustrating the inherent statistical risks involved in speculative forecasting.

For trader 0xA2, that underlying principle means the 14% probability of an unexpected shift in the Alaska Senate race is a very real risk that could erase hundreds of thousands of dollars in unrealized profits before the final ballot is certified.
