Digital financial services provider Zip (ASX: ZIP) has announced a significant expansion of its ongoing partnership with global flight booking platform Alternative Airlines. The strategic collaboration now extends Zip’s popular buy-now-pay-later and installment payment capabilities from air travel to Alternative Airlines’ newly launched car rental booking service, covering thousands of locations across the United States.

The move builds directly upon the existing relationship between the two companies, which has previously allowed travelers to seamlessly finance their flights using Zip at checkout. With this latest development, customers utilizing Alternative Airlines to plan their trips can now manage both their flights and their ground transportation under a unified, flexible payment structure. Travelers searching for vehicle rentals through the platform can compare options from a broad spectrum of major providers across the United States and choose Zip at the final payment stage to divide their expenses into manageable installments, provided they meet eligibility requirements.

Executives from both companies emphasize that the expansion addresses a persistent consumer need for integrated, budget-conscious travel planning. In modern trip coordination, expenses rarely occur as a single isolated transaction. From securing airfare and booking accommodations to arranging ground transport and activities, travelers are frequently forced to juggle multiple financial commitments across different platforms and providers.

"Travel is rarely just one purchase. From flights to transportation on the ground, each part of a trip has to fit within a customer’s plans and budget," said Peter Volynsky, Chief Commercial Officer at Zip US. "Our partnership with Alternative Airlines brings the flexibility customers value with Zip to more of their travel journey, giving them greater choice and control over how they pay."

The integration arrives as Alternative Airlines rolls out its dedicated car rental booking platform. Designed to replicate the streamlined, user-friendly experience long associated with its flight booking operations, the new car rental service allows users to easily search, evaluate, and compare vehicle options in a single centralized hub. Furthermore, the platform offers dedicated customer support options, allowing travelers to reach out for assistance by phone or WhatsApp to address any inquiries or unexpected changes during their booking process.

When utilizing the new checkout feature, eligible customers who select Zip make an initial payment at the exact time of booking, with the remaining balance automatically split into subsequent installments. This mechanism mirrors the familiar structure that millions of digital consumers have adopted for everyday retail and e-commerce purchases, applying it directly to the travel and hospitality sector where upfront costs can often create significant financial hurdles for households.

For Alternative Airlines, the introduction of an integrated car rental offering represents a major corporate milestone and an important evolution of its service portfolio. The company has built its reputation on connecting global consumers with hundreds of airlines worldwide while offering diverse, localized payment methods to accommodate different financial preferences. Extending these capabilities to ground transportation creates a more holistic ecosystem for travel planning.

"Car Rentals is a significant milestone for the Alternative Airlines brand, bringing the seamless booking experience, expert customer support, and payment flexibility that our customers love about flights to car rentals for the first time," said Sam Argyle, Managing Director at Alternative Airlines. "We’re thrilled to be launching with Zip as an integrated payment option. Zip is a long-standing partner, and its flexible instalment options are a perfect fit for car rentals."

The broader economic landscape has seen rising demand for flexible payment solutions within the travel and leisure industry, as consumers increasingly seek transparency, predictability, and control over their discretionary spending. Traditional travel financing options have often involved rigid credit card structures or cumbersome loan applications, whereas digital installment platforms like Zip offer integrated, point-of-sale transparency that allows consumers to review repayment terms instantly before confirming their reservations.

By combining Alternative Airlines’ comprehensive inventory—which features flights from more than 600 airlines worldwide—with Zip’s people-centered digital financial products, the expanded collaboration bridges a historical gap in trip management. Historically, booking a complete travel itinerary required coordinating separate financial transactions across multiple third-party vendors for flights, hotels, and car rentals. By unifying flexible financing across these distinct travel verticals, the partnership aims to reduce friction in the consumer journey.

The announcement underscores a broader trend within the fintech and travel sectors, where digital service providers are forging deeper integrations to capture a larger share of the end-to-end consumer experience. As travelers increasingly prioritize convenience and financial flexibility, collaborations that connect disparate elements of a journey—moving seamlessly from the flight to the open road—are expected to play an increasingly vital role in modern consumer travel habits.

The expanded payment functionality is currently live and available to eligible customers using the Alternative Airlines platform for car rental bookings across thousands of locations in the United States.
