WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today announced a major $237 million funding opportunity aimed at boosting American manufacturing and fortifying the domestic supply chains responsible for producing critical electric grid components. This substantial financial commitment is projected to deliver an estimated $125 million in annual utility savings nationwide while simultaneously retaining approximately $50 million per year within the U.S. economy that would otherwise flow to overseas suppliers.
The strategic investments are designed to facilitate the reliable, uninterrupted flow of electricity for American families and businesses alike. By incentivizing the refurbishment and reuse of essential equipment alongside the adoption of alternative materials and subcomponents sourced and manufactured entirely within the United States, the initiative aims to position the nation as a global leader in foundational energy technologies. These concerted efforts are expected to lower overall operational costs, dramatically enhance grid reliability, and effectively meet growing electricity demand across the country.
“President Trump is bringing American industry and manufacturing back home, including the critical equipment and components needed to power our nation,” said U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright. “The Energy Department is investing in American-made technologies and modernizing our grid to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers and deliver affordable, reliable electricity.”
This landmark funding opportunity will target support across projects in two key areas focused on reshaping how the nation builds and maintains its electrical infrastructure. By prioritizing domestic production, the initiative directly addresses vulnerabilities that have historically left the national grid exposed to international supply chain disruptions, material shortages, and geopolitical tensions.
“America should never have to rely on foreign suppliers to keep the lights on,” said Office of Electricity Assistant Secretary Katie Jereza. “We’re putting American ingenuity to work, developing next-generation grid technologies that strengthen our domestic supply chain, help lower costs, and make our grid more reliable. The power to secure our energy future should be in our own hands.”
The funding opportunity, officially titled the Grid Supply Chain Alternatives to Lead Energy Dominance (Grid SCALED) initiative, represents the inaugural rollout under the broader DOE Grid Supply Chain Program. Authorized to provide up to $375 million in total investments, the overarching program is strategically dedicated to strengthening domestic supply chains specifically for the manufacturing of distribution and power transformers, essential grid components, and critical raw materials. Following this initial $237 million launch, additional funding announcements are anticipated in 2027 to further bolster domestic supply chains for next-generation technologies—such as solid-state transformers—and to promote common configurations designed to streamline and accelerate American manufacturing processes.
For prospective participants looking to secure funding under the Grid SCALED initiative, the Department of Energy has established a clear timeline for submissions. Applicants must submit a comprehensive concept paper by November 20, 2026, in order to qualify to submit a full application. Following the concept paper phase, final full applications will be due by February 8, 2027.
