Tether, the issuer of the world’s largest stablecoin, has reported a robust financial performance for the third quarter, pulling in $1.5 billion in net operating profit as its excess reserve buffer nearly doubled to reach $7.95 billion. The figures were released alongside the company’s latest attestation report, which was prepared by independent accounting firm BDO, underscoring the ongoing financial scale and asset accumulation of the digital asset giant.

According to the data released by the company, Tether held a massive $191.5 billion in total assets against $132.4 billion in liabilities at the end of September. This left the firm with a substantial reserve surplus of $7.95 billion, representing an almost hundred percent increase from the $4.1 billion reserve surplus reported just a few months prior in June. A significant portion of these assets remains heavily anchored in ultra-safe, highly liquid government debt. Specifically, the company’s holdings included $132.4 billion in direct and indirect United States Treasury bill holdings.

To put this sovereign debt exposure into a broader macroeconomic perspective, Tether’s holdings of US government securities are now comparable to entire national economies. According to international capital data published in August by the US Treasury Department, Tether’s $132.4 billion exposure places it on par with South Korea, which held $134.2 billion in US government debt, and comfortably exceeds the holdings of the United Arab Emirates, which stood at $116.1 billion during the same period. This massive accumulation cements Tether’s position not only as a dominant force in the cryptocurrency ecosystem but also as a notable institutional buyer of short-term US sovereign debt on the global stage.

The third-quarter profitability contributes to a broader wave of financial success for the firm throughout the year. Tether reported that it generated a staggering $4.5 billion in net operating profit during the first nine months of the year. The company noted that this income was largely driven by the steady yields generated by its extensive US Treasury bill holdings, alongside returns from reverse repurchase agreements. In addition to traditional debt instruments, Tether continues to diversify its balance sheet holdings into alternative assets. Its strategic Bitcoin reserves were valued at $8.37 billion at the end of the third quarter, marking a sharp increase from approximately $5.8 billion at the end of June, driven by both additional acquisitions and market price movements.

Despite intense competition within the digital asset sector, Tether’s flagship product, USDT, remains firmly entrenched as the undisputed leader in the global stablecoin market. Market analytics from DefiLlama indicate that USDT commands around 60% of the entire $297.3 billion stablecoin market, making it a critical liquidity bridge across both centralized and decentralized cryptocurrency exchanges worldwide. The scale of this adoption was recently highlighted by company leadership. On Friday, Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino took to the social media platform X to announce that the user base for USDT has officially surpassed the milestone of 700 million individuals globally. According to company insights, this adoption is heavily concentrated in emerging markets, where stablecoins often serve as an essential tool for cross-border remittances, protection against local currency inflation, and access to digital dollar-denominated financial services.

While Tether continues to report record-breaking financial metrics and massive user adoption, the company has historically faced years of intense public and regulatory scrutiny regarding the transparency and composition of its reserves. Critics and market observers have frequently demanded deeper insights into the exact nature of the commercial paper, secured loans, and other assets backing the token. In an effort to address these long-standing concerns regarding corporate transparency, the stablecoin issuer announced a major milestone in August: the completion of its first full independent financial statement audit conducted by major accounting firm KPMG US. However, despite the completion of this historic audit, the full audited financial statements themselves were not made publicly available by the company, leaving market analysts awaiting further disclosures regarding the complete scope of Tether’s corporate financial health.
