Crypto hardware wallet manufacturer Ledger has announced the rollout of a new feature designed to allow users to borrow stablecoins against their Bitcoin holdings without the traditional requirement of giving up custody of their digital assets. The newly introduced Crypto Loan feature enables Ledger Wallet users to deposit wrapped iterations of Bitcoin as collateral, subsequently borrowing the dollar-pegged stablecoins USDC or USDT directly within the application interface.
The service is powered by the decentralized on-chain lending network Morpho and is integrated into the Ledger application ecosystem through Yield.xyz. By utilizing this infrastructure, holders of Bitcoin can lock their assets into smart contracts to secure liquidity while maintaining their underlying market exposure for the duration of the loan, thereby bypassing the need to liquidate their long-term holdings in order to access fiat-equivalent funds.
According to Ledger, users have the flexibility to post either Coinbase Wrapped BTC, known as cbBTC, or Wrapped Bitcoin, commonly referred to wBTC, as collateral. This design ensures that investors retain their Bitcoin price exposure rather than forfeiting their position in the asset, which is a common compromise required by traditional centralized lending institutions and custodial crypto platforms.
In its official release notes detailing the October 2026 update, Ledger emphasized the structural shift toward decentralized infrastructure, stating that Morpho operates as an on-chain credit network where smart contracts govern every single interaction. Under this framework, user collateral remains strictly on-chain rather than sitting on a centralized entity’s balance sheet, mitigating the counterparty risks historically associated with centralized cryptocurrency lending platforms.
Security and transparency remain central to the integration. Every phase of the borrowing lifecycle—from the initial approval of smart contracts to loan repayment and final collateral withdrawal—requires physical confirmation on the screen of a Ledger hardware security device. The device is designed to display each smart contract function in plain language, allowing users to verify transaction parameters before authorizing any movement of funds.
Furthermore, the Ledger application incorporates real-time portfolio tracking tools. The interface monitors each individual loan’s loan-to-value ratio, offering users the capability to dynamically add collateral, repay outstanding balances, borrow additional funds, or withdraw excess assets at any time. The application also includes a simulation tool, enabling users to preview the projected mechanics and metrics of a loan before committing capital to the underlying smart contracts.
Alongside the primary Bitcoin-backed lending functionality, Ledger is expanding its application capabilities by introducing direct access to Morpho’s broader lending markets and curated vaults. This expansion allows users to participate in depositing, borrowing, and yield-earning activities across Ethereum and major layer-2 scaling networks directly through their trusted hardware wallet interface.
As with any decentralized finance operation, Ledger noted that the new Crypto Loan feature involves variable interest rates and inherent liquidation risks if the value of the collateral depreciates significantly relative to the borrowed amount. Additionally, the availability of the Crypto Loan feature is subject to regional regulatory compliance and country-specific availability.
Emphasizing its role within the ecosystem, Ledger stated that it acts strictly as a technology provider facilitating the interface connection and does not offer financial advice or broker financial products directly.
