Enshrouded 1.0 Review: The Fog Clears to Reveal a Survival-Crafting Masterpiece

High up on a mountain in the Albaneve Summits, just on the southern border of Enshrouded’s expansive new zone, sits the blueprint for a next medieval building project. Safe with no nearby enemy spawns on a flat stretch of land, it features a picturesque frozen pond that gives it a distinct, postcard-like appeal. It is the ideal spot for a cliffside castle.

The only issue is finding a way up. Without a clear path for climbing or gliding, access requires engineering a solution. While traditional building takes time, impatience often breeds creativity. Instead of standard construction, players can carve a tunnel straight through the mountainside from base to peak using bombs and pickaxes. It may not look pristine initially, but it gets the job done for the newly awakened Flameborn.

That freedom of expression has always been a defining trait of Enshrouded. Developed by Keen Games, the high-fantasy survival-crafting RPG allows players to destroy or build practically anything, anywhere within Embervale’s voxel-based world. As the game hits its official 1.0 release on October 15, 2026, priced at $40/£35 and verified for the Steam Deck, it continues to prove that its sandbox is among the most impressive in the genre. Every location hidden by the fog of war holds the potential for new materials, powerful weapons, or breathtaking scenic vistas. Even after dozens of hours, the release build consistently uncovers fresh, inventive ways to surprise players.

Built Different

Enshrouded occupies a unique space in the gaming landscape. It is neither a traditional survival-crafting game nor a typical action RPG. Its combat system and base-building mechanics are far more robust than most survival peers, yet it deliberately avoids the punishing, punishingly harsh loops of the genre. Progression is driven less by desperate survival anxieties and more by a genuine desire to explore Embervale—a land devastated by a mysterious, malignant miasma known simply as the Shroud. With barely a soul left alive in the open world, history is pieced together through journals. Some are hastily scribbled notes left by would-be heroes, while others are tragic retellings of someone’s final days in a dying realm.

Players awaken from a mystical slumber poorly equipped and dressed in a basic "ragged armor set," stepping into the shoes of the Flameborn—an ordained chosen one and humanity’s last hope for restoring the ruins of Embervale. Initially, the experience feels grounded, echoing classic rags-to-riches genre foundations. Characters graduate from fighting with sticks and foraging for berries to wielding magic-infused swords and dining on high-tier meals. However, Enshrouded deliberately trims away some of the more punitive survival mechanics common to the industry, omitting constant fatigue checks, random crafting failures, and structural integrity equations.

The game recognizes that players are often motivated by creature comforts. As long as a base provides shelter, a fire, and thoughtful interior decoration, characters receive stamina-boosting buffs simply for spending time at home, completely bypassing the threat of death by sleep deprivation. Unique furnishings carry individual comfort statistics, creating a tangible incentive to scour Embervale for new rugs, fireplaces, or decorative items to secure longer and more powerful buffs. For players who love architectural design and base decoration, this rewarding system validates the extra effort spent building a cozy home.

While custom difficulty options exist—including optional settings for dehydration and starvation introduced during early access—the core experience shines brightly without forced, punishing survival loops. Farming, cooking, and animal husbandry are compelling enough on their own merit without requiring do-this-or-die mechanics to remain engaging. Furthermore, the inclusion of a refined building camera in version 1.0 makes working in tight corners significantly smoother, eliminating repetitive construction frustrations.

Fog of War

Repetitive tasks can easily drain the joy out of even the finest survival-crafting games, but Enshrouded walks the fine line between tedium and satisfaction with remarkable balance. Much of this success stems from its forgiving penalty philosophy, paired with an RPG layer that provides genuine mechanical depth.

In multiplayer sessions, this depth truly comes to life through specialized combat roles. Rather than funnerling points into a handful of barebones attributes, the Flameborn can specialize across 12 distinct skill trees. Players can mix and match perks to fill classic archetypes like tanks, glass-cannon wizards, battlemage healers, or stealthy assassins. Beyond combat, cooperative groups naturally fall into designated domestic roles, dividing responsibilities such as mining, woodcutting, gardening, and cooking.

Version 1.0 also introduces Sparkworks, a robust logic system enabling players to design their own enemy spawns, player-triggered events, custom dungeons, and shareable obstacle courses. While casual builders can spend hours exploring intricately designed player-made hobbit holes, creators have powerful tools at their fingertips to challenge the community.

Multiplayer sessions do present minor friction points, particularly regarding quest coordination. When groups fall out of sync because certain members complete world progression quests while others are offline, returning players may find their personal journals misaligned. While this can cause momentary confusion, it rarely locks players out of vital crafting recipes or new biomes, usually resulting in little more than a minor XP discrepancy and missed narrative moments. For groups tackling massive end-game dungeons like the Hollow Halls, however, playing on a dedicated server is strongly recommended to smooth out occasional performance spikes during high-intensity group combat.

Ultimately, Enshrouded transcends the often stagnant early access pool of the survival-crafting genre. Backed by hundreds of hours of carefully crafted content, distinct environmental identity, and polished mechanics, it stands out as a triumph of sandbox design. Keen Games has delivered an experience that leaves a lasting impression, setting a high watermark for what players can expect from the genre moving forward.
