US Spot Bitcoin ETFs Suffer $635 Million Outflow, Pushing October Flows Into the Red

United States spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds experienced a sharp reversal of fortune on Thursday, recording a massive $635 million in net outflows that effectively wiped out a recent multi-day recovery and dragged the broader monthly performance back into negative territory.

According to data compiled by SoSoValue, Thursday’s heavy withdrawals more than completely erased the $528 million in net inflows that had entered the funds just a day earlier. The sudden shift in institutional sentiment pushed October’s cumulative net flows down to a negative $175 million, highlighting the persistent volatility that continues to characterize institutional crypto investment vehicles even as Bitcoin maintains a relatively high valuation range.

The scale of Thursday’s redemption wave made it the largest single-day net outflow for the asset class since late June. Specifically, the market had not witnessed such a significant one-day departure of capital since June 25, when Bitcoin ETFs suffered a staggering $696 million exit as the broader cryptocurrency market faced downward price pressures and Bitcoin traded below the $60,000 threshold.

Before Thursday’s abrupt downturn, the investment products had enjoyed a robust three-day inflow streak that had successfully attracted approximately $1.08 billion in fresh capital, lifting market spirits and encouraging hopes of a sustained bullish trend heading into the final stretch of the month. However, the sudden capital flight abruptly halted that momentum.

Despite the severe setback suffered on the final trading days of the period, the weekly ledger managed to stay afloat, wrapping up with net inflows of $443 million. This weekly resilience came on the heels of a more challenging preceding period, during which the funds had endured two consecutive weeks of net outflows before staging their short-lived rebound.

The dramatic shift in exchange-traded fund flows coincided with notable price movements in the underlying cryptocurrency asset. Bitcoin traded within a relatively wide band between $80,996 and $82,551 on Thursday, retreating from the previous day’s robust intraday high of $84,777. At the time of publication, the pioneer cryptocurrency was changing hands at approximately $81,783, registering a modest decline of around 1% over the preceding 24-hour window, according to data from CoinGecko. Market analysts and traders have closely monitored these price zones, particularly as Bitcoin’s valuation hovers near key institutional cost bases, while broader macroeconomic and geopolitical headlines—such as recent commentary from political figures regarding international tensions involving Iran—continue to weigh on traditional equity markets and spill over into digital asset sentiment.

The risk-off sentiment on Thursday was not isolated to Bitcoin products; alternative cryptocurrency investment funds faced similar downward pressure across the board. Ether exchange-traded funds recorded roughly $111 million in net outflows, reflecting a parallel retreat by institutional investors holding the second-largest digital asset. Following the trend, Solana-based investment products shed approximately $9 million, while Hyperliquid (HYPE) ETFs experienced around $8 million in net withdrawals.

Amid the widespread capital flight across major digital asset categories, XRP exchange-traded funds bucked the prevailing negative trend entirely, managing to attract approximately $3.6 million in net inflows for the day and demonstrating pockets of independent momentum within specific altcoin segments.

As market participants continue to navigate the intricate interplay between macroeconomic triggers, shifting geopolitical landscapes, and fluctuating institutional liquidity, the performance of spot crypto ETFs remains a critical barometer for institutional appetite. The rapid transitions between multi-hundred-million-dollar inflows and outflows underscore the dynamic and fast-paced nature of digital asset markets, where sentiment can pivot on a dime in response to external pressures and short-term price adjustments.
