Visa (NYSE: V) has announced a significant expansion of its commercial payment ecosystem, introducing three major capabilities aimed at commercial card growth, virtual card security, and the emerging frontier of agentic commerce. These new offerings are purposefully designed to help financial institutions, fintech partners, and corporate enterprises successfully navigate the rapid automation of financial workflows while preserving the rigorous standards of trust, visibility, and control that high-value business transactions demand.
The modern corporate landscape is undergoing a profound digital transformation. Organizations across virtually every industry are working feverishly to eliminate manual bottlenecks in their back-office operations, spanning everything from initial supplier discovery and invoice approval to final payment execution. However, this shift toward speed and automation introduces complex new challenges regarding fraud prevention, data visibility, and secure authorization. Visa’s latest suite of innovations addresses these precise vulnerabilities, offering advanced data analytics, robust multi-stage fraud protections, and pioneering frameworks for artificial intelligence integration in business-to-business (B2B) transactions.
Addressing the announcement, Darren Parslow, global head of Visa Commercial Solutions, emphasized the shifting priorities of modern enterprises. Businesses are moving quickly to automate the work around payments, from identifying supplier opportunities to approving invoices and executing transactions. According to Parslow, these new capabilities are specifically designed to help companies execute these processes with the data, security, and controls they require, whether they are focused on growing commercial card acceptance, protecting virtual-card payments from emerging fraud vectors, or testing how trusted AI agents can safely act on their behalf.
Helping Financial Institutions Find Commercial Card Growth
To help financial institutions unlock new avenues for expansion, Visa has introduced the next generation of its Supplier Enablement Spend Analytics platform, known as SESA 2.0. This advanced offering builds directly upon four years of operational experience in helping issuing banks and financial institutions evaluate supplier payment opportunities and optimize their commercial portfolios.
SESA 2.0 integrates artificial intelligence-driven supplier scoring with comprehensive Visa commercial payments data, granular buyer benchmarks, and sophisticated business-value modeling. Together, these integrated components allow financial institutions to pinpoint suppliers that exhibit a higher statistical likelihood of accepting commercial card payments, while simultaneously estimating potential commercial card growth opportunities within specific supply chains. Since the inception of the original SESA platform, the technology has assisted financial institutions in uncovering more than $600 billion in potential cardable spend.
As business-to-business payments become increasingly digital and data-driven, financial institutions require both a clear panoramic view of where card acceptance opportunities exist and the granular information needed to evaluate those prospects with absolute confidence. Enhanced visibility into card acceptance patterns empowers both suppliers and buyers to make more informed strategic decisions as they modernize their legacy payment flows and treasury operations.
Strengthening Trust in Commercial Virtual Card Payments
In tandem with its commercial growth analytics, Visa has launched Visa Commercial Fraud Solutions, a comprehensive suite of capabilities engineered to fortify security across commercial virtual card payments and support more trusted, automated payment experiences in an increasingly digital economy.

Market forecasts underscore the urgency of these security enhancements. According to projections by Juniper Research, global B2B virtual card payment volume is expected to reach a staggering $14.6 trillion by 2029, accounting for an overwhelming 83 percent of the global virtual card market. As this adoption curve steepens dramatically, organizations are facing unprecedented pressure to verify supplier identities, authenticate system users, and ensure that every corporate payment is executed precisely as intended without unauthorized deviations.
Visa Commercial Fraud Solutions provides structured protection across three critical stages of a commercial payment lifecycle: verifying supplier integrity, authenticating users securely, and enforcing precise transaction controls. Through these integrated defenses, the suite aims to mitigate the growing risks associated with digital payment fraud, ensuring that organizations can scale their virtual card programs without compromising on security or oversight. Visa Commercial Payment Controls are already available in supported countries and territories to eligible issuing financial institutions, while Visa Commercial Virtual Authentication and Visa Commercial Supplier Validation are currently undergoing live pilots ahead of anticipated general availability in 2027.
Testing How Trusted AI Agents Can Complete Business Payments
Perhaps the most forward-looking component of Visa’s announcement is a collaborative live pilot involving Visa, BILL, and Billtrust. This pioneering initiative enables trusted AI agents to autonomously initiate and successfully complete approved business invoice payments directly through supplier portals.
The pilot draws heavily from Visa Intelligent Commerce and Visa’s proprietary Trusted Agent Protocol. These foundational frameworks work in concert to establish the true identity of the AI agent, formally confirm that the agent is explicitly authorized to act on behalf of the enterprise, and ensure that every transaction strictly adheres to pre-defined business controls and governance parameters.
Rather than relying on vulnerable shared login credentials to access supplier portals, the system utilizes advanced tokenized payment credentials. It seamlessly bridges buyer-side invoice approval mechanisms with supplier-side payment acceptance systems. This architecture provides businesses with a secure, controlled environment to test automated execution while maintaining absolute visibility into who is acting, what specific tasks the agent is permitted to perform, and which individual transactions have received formal authorization. The pilot is currently live and actively processing end-to-end transactions with participating BILL customers and Billtrust suppliers.
Building a Trusted Foundation for Automated Commerce
As business payments march further into an automated future, trust is rapidly solidifying as the fundamental prerequisite that allows automation to scale securely and efficiently. The future of commercial payments will likely depend not only on the raw speed at which money can traverse global networks, but equally on whether every individual participant, cryptographic credential, and automated action can be reliably identified, authenticated, and governed.
Achieving this level of resilience requires dependable data structures, verified digital identities, and robust fraud controls designed from the ground up to ensure approved transactions execute exactly as intended. By making targeted investments across every phase of the payment process, Visa is actively helping businesses maintain enduring confidence in who is performing an action, what has been officially authorized, and how payments are ultimately completed. By embedding trust directly into every stage of the transaction lifecycle, the company is positioning businesses to transition from approved financial decisions to final execution with unprecedented speed, heightened security, and uncompromised control.
