CD Projekt Red Rethinks Cyberpunk Live-Action Project, Moving Away From a Direct Game Adaptation

CD Projekt Red is charting a completely new course for its upcoming live-action adaptation set in the neon-soaked underworld of Night City. Following the expiration of its previous contract with Anonymous Content and a shift in production partners toward Paramount Pictures, studio leadership has clarified that the project will bypass a direct translation of Cyberpunk 2077’s main storyline. Instead of recreating the harrowing journey of V and Johnny Silverhand on the silver screen, the studio intends to tell an entirely fresh story within the expansive tabletop-inspired universe.

The evolution of the live-action project marks a significant strategic pivot for the Polish development house. Originally announced back in 2023 as a collaborative live-action venture with Anonymous Content, the adaptation spent considerable time in early development before ultimately stalling out. During a recent financial briefing with Polish media outlet PAP Biznes, CD Projekt co-CEO Michał Nowakowski shed light on the transition. Discussing the shift from their former collaborators to an upcoming partnership with Paramount Pictures, Nowakowski explained that the studio deliberately chose to reinvent the cinematic approach.

"Our contract with Anonymous Content expired, and in the meantime, an opportunity arose to establish cooperation with Paramount Pictures," Nowakowski told PAP Biznes. "We decided that we would conduct a live-action Cyberpunk project in a new formula."

Elaborating further on the creative direction of the film or series, Nowakowski emphasized that fans should not expect a shot-for-shot retelling of the critically acclaimed role-playing game. "At this point, we can only say that we definitely don’t want to make a film adaptation of the game," he stated. "We want to tell a story in the world of Cyberpunk, but it won’t be a one-to-one translation of the game’s story."

This decision arrives as a relief to many veterans of the genre and fans of the source material. Cyberpunk 2077 heavily leaned on the star power and performances of Hollywood actors, most notably Keanu Silverhand as the rebellious rockerboy Johnny Silverhand and a deeply personal narrative centered around the protagonist V. Attempting to compress dozens of hours of branching narrative, complex player choices, and intricate character arcs into a standard feature film runtime often invites inevitable pitfalls. A direct adaptation risks alienating longtime fans through necessary cuts while inviting harsh comparisons to the source material that defined the modern video game landscape.

By choosing to explore an original narrative within Night City, CD Projekt Red preserves the integrity of V’s established journey while opening the floodgates to countless other tales waiting to be told. The sprawling metropolis featured in Mike Pondsmith’s original tabletop role-playing setting is vast enough to encompass infinite perspectives, from corporate espionage in the towering skyscrapers of the city center to brutal gang warfare in the lawless expanse of the Badlands. Furthermore, a standalone story leaves room for subtle world-building connections, Easter eggs, background lore references, or even unexpected character cameos that can tether the cinematic project to the game universe without feeling chained to its specific plot points.

This methodology has already proven successful for the franchise outside of traditional game development. One of the most celebrated game-to-screen adaptations in recent memory, the critically acclaimed animated series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, took the underlying technological and cultural framework of Pondsmith’s setting and crafted a completely independent tragedy. Rather than following V, Edgerunners introduced David Martinez, a street kid striving to survive the brutal realities of Night City. By establishing its own timeline, original cast of characters, and distinct visual style, the anime expanded the cultural footprint of the franchise and brought a wave of new players into the video game fold.

A similar philosophy has historically benefited other major multimedia franchises, demonstrating that audiences often respond better to stories that inhabit a familiar universe rather than rehashing plots they have already experienced firsthand. The Resident Evil cinematic legacy, despite its many iterations, found considerable traction by treating its source material as a sandbox rather than a strict script to be memorized. For CD Projekt Red, approaching the live-action medium through original storytelling aligns cleanly with how the studio’s projects have always operated: building upon Mike Pondsmith’s foundational lore through distinct creative lenses.

While the strategic announcement provides a clearer vision of what CD Projekt Red intends to avoid, concrete details regarding the plot, cast, director, and release window for the Paramount Pictures collaboration remain tightly under wraps. Given the early stage of development following the recent transition in production partners, it will likely be a significant amount of time before audiences receive a first look at footage or official casting announcements.

In the meantime, fans eager for more multimedia storytelling set within the dystopian metropolis do not have to wait indefinitely. The expansion of the franchise continues with the upcoming release of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, which is scheduled to make its debut on Netflix. As both the animation side of the franchise pushes forward and the live-action partnership with Paramount takes shape, CD Projekt Red is steadily solidifying Night City as a multimedia universe capable of supporting multiple independent narratives across different creative mediums.
